Elimination Communication

We Can Help You

Never heard of it? Though it seems like a best kept secret, Elimination Communication has actually been practiced worldwide for generations as a method to potty a baby or toddler. It helps decrease, or completely get rid of, the need for diapering. It can be practiced full-time or part-time, and can easily be adjusted for social and culture norms. Whether you’re just curious, or all in, we can guide you along this “crazy” EC journey. The benefits of Elimination Communication are:

Increase the bond with your baby
Help avoid diaper rash & UTI’s
Save $60-$120 monthly on diapering supplies
Reduce your eco-footprint immensely

What are the benefits of practicing Elimination Communication (EC) in comparison to Potty Training?

This is a modern question that wouldn’t have been asked two generations ago. There was no other option previously. Now that we have access to washers/dryers and disposable diapers the norm seems to have shifted to Potty Training in many countries, to the benefit of diaper makers and the detriment of the environment. But, even today, the benefits of Elimination Communication are great.

EC doesn’t have to be a full-time commitment. It can be done at home only, or during weekdays only, during awake hours only, or for those under age 12-months for small bits of time during a day. You can go at your own pace. You can start and stop if need be.

If you think of Potty Training as compressed Elimination Communication, then think of Elimination Communication as the more natural, life-paced approach to noticing the signs and signals of your child’s biological needs to which you can be attentive for the sake of bonding, attentiveness and hygiene. Both can work, but EC typically makes the pottying process an easier integration into the rhythm of one’s day, routine, lifestyle and family. Most children who practice EC are out of diapers at an earlier age, with fewer accidents longer term.

How committed to Elimination Communication (EC) do I have to be?

You can practice EC full-time, part-time, daytime only, secretively on your own :), with friends and family, in a city, in suburbia, at home only, everywhere you go, at a beach, at a restaurant, on the side of the road. We can help cater the EC experience to your family, no matter how much or how little you’d like to try it out for.

Is Elimination Communication (EC) just really slow early Potty Training?

Not exactly. It is responding to a child’s biological need to urinate and have a bowel movement and a human’s preference to be clean. Potty Training is typically done from a standstill to full speed ahead. Elimination Communication is a more consistent, typically more gentle process that doesn’t involve extrinsic motivation (such as M&Ms and stickers). EC is a less abrupt method and creates a sense of normalcy around pottying from a very young age, which typically helps avoid issues of fear, refusal and manipulation over pottying that can often arise from beginning to potty train a child over the age of 2 ½ -3 years old.

Do we need to be using cloth diapers in order for Elimination Communication (EC) to work?

No, this is a myth. You can use disposables, or no diapers at all (if you are fully committed and attentive).

If I am just starting out with Elimination Communication (EC) and have nothing more than interest, does a Personalized Consultation even make sense?

Yes! We love consults with families who are new to the idea of Elimination Communication and aren’t sold on the idea yet. We have done both phone and Home Consultations with expectant families using their pregnant time to learn and prepare for the future.

My child is 14-17 months. Should I be starting to potty train, or practicing Elimination Communication (EC)?

There is no hard and fast rule, but in our years of experience only two 14 to 15-month-olds have potty trained successfully (meaning they can take themselves without accidents at least 75% of the time for both poo and pee). That said, if your child is 16 or 17 months and you have never started EC, it may make more sense for your family to just start with a Potty Training method and realize that there will be a maintenance period (don’t expect it to take 2-days to fully potty train a 15-month-old).

What Our Clients Are Saying

"I would like to thank you again for our chat/consultation. We have hit a major improvement in potty training our daughter, whereby she is now asking to go toilet (which she never did previously) and also going with minimal accidents, if any at all. She has also been at nursery all day today, and not one accident. I couldn't be more proud of her, but also go glad the potty training challenge and our consultation helped me!"

- Dee (London, England - United Kingdom)

"One of the parents that attended your potty training at Mitchell Child Development Center implemented what you presented at our training and now her son is fully potty trained. She wanted me to let you know that what you shared with the parents was very effective and she wanted to thank you for helping her in the potty training process. It made my day when she approached me and I told her I would pass the message on to you. Thank you for helping our parents!"

- Lisa  (Santa Ana, CA), Mitchell Child Development Center

"Michelle is passionate about Potty Training and genuinely wants to help you!! She is a wonderful mama to her 3 littles and still makes time to answer all your questions. She is a true cheerleader on your potty training adventure."

- Nicole (Newport Beach, CA, USA)

"Michelle not only has a heart of GOLD that really cares about your child and YOUR parenting style - her information is PLATINUM in helping you find the tools and tricks that educate and support you (in my opinion) one of the hardest aspects of early childhood parenting!"

- Megan (Gilbertsville, PA)

"As a behavior analyst, I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and enjoy challenging my mind with new concepts for application both personally and professionally. However; as a mother, practical application of theories can be challenging, especially toileting, due to the intricacies of life. The Potty School, provided a succinct yet thorough explanation of EC (Elimination Communication) methodology and how to incorporate it into our lives naturally and easily. I highly recommend The Potty School to all those interested in elimination communication."

– Alicia (Orange County, CA)

"I just wanted to thank you. We had our consult with you last weekend over the phone, and talked about our daughter Charlotte who has been refusing to poop on the potty for nine months. We implemented your suggestions and she has been pooping on the potty all week! This is such a relief for us. We are very pleased, and I’ve already recommended you to friends. Just wanted to say thank you for the help you have given us."

– Kristen (pediatric ENT doc at a large children’s hospital)

"I am a mom of a 26 month old with Down syndrome! So many people have told me what my daughter CAN'T do! It was very encouraging to hear that while I may have to take extra time and extra steps, my daughter CAN be potty trained like a typical toddler! I've already seen her working on pushing and pulling up and down her pants, she has had success on the potty as well. Yes she also has accidents and I can't wait to talk to The Potty School for a more tailored plan for us! Thank you The Potty School for caring about our kids with special needs and giving us HOPE! (Which just happens to be my daughter's name)."

– Laura

"My 3 year old twins have been on a really good stretch for several days now after weeks of working on potty training. When I fully committed to following your helpful advice/suggestions, I saw success x's two!!!"

– Joanna

"I cannot even begin to tell you how much the membership helped me!! I was so nervous going into Potty Training with my son and the preparation, support, encouragement and information were key in an easy and seamless transition from diapers to undies!! Would have been a wreck without this group. Plus, Michelle is so awesome, giving of her time even tho she's a mom of three and has so many tricks up her sleeve.  I still hear her voice when I'm taking my son potty!!

– Elizabeth (Pasadena, CA, USA)
